How to Fix a Bulging Lithium-Polymer Battery

Swollen or bulging lithium-polymer batteries must never be repaired or continued to use; they must be taken out of service immediately and replaced.

I. Why Can’t Swollen Batteries Be Repaired?

When a lithium-ion battery swells, it is essentially caused by gas buildup, electrolyte decomposition, and cell damage, posing safety risks such as leakage, overheating, fire, and explosion.

So-called “repair methods” such as puncturing to release air, squeezing, freezing, or applying an electric shock are all extremely dangerous and must not be attempted under any circumstances.

A bulge is irreversible physical damage, and there are no safe ways to repair it.

II.How to Handle Swollen Batteries

1.Cut off the power immediately

Stop charging, stop using, and unplug the device.

2.Do not squeeze, puncture, heat, or freeze

Any external force could cause a short circuit and result in a fire.

3.Store safely

Store in a cool, well-ventilated place away from flammable materials. Do not store in pockets, on beds, or inside vehicles.

4.Replace the battery immediately

This is the only safe and effective way to handle it.
