Are ternary batteries waterproof?

I. The Essence of Water Protection

【Water Protection】is essentially a waterproof design. The waterproof performance of ternary lithium batteries depends on the cell encapsulation process:

Prismatic aluminum-cased batteries: Sealed using laser welding, offering strong splash resistance

Pouch batteries: Encapsulated with multi-layer composite film, providing moisture resistance but must not be submerged

Cylindrical batteries: Featuring a metal casing with a pressure relief valve, offering protection against light rain but must be shielded from high-pressure water jets

II. Actual Water Resistance Testing

Under laboratory conditions, typical ternary lithium-ion batteries exhibit the following performance:

Splash resistance: Meets IP54 protection rating (no impact from water splashes from any direction)

Short-term immersion: Some products can survive for 30 minutes at a depth of one meter

Extreme environments: Exposure to water at -20°C may cause the casing to become brittle and crack

III. Recommendations for Daily Use and Protection

Want to keep your lithium-ion battery safer? Keep these three points in mind:

Avoid rinsing the battery pack with a high-pressure water jet.

Wipe the contact surfaces dry immediately after use in humid environments.

Stop using the battery immediately if you notice any deformation of the casing.

While most battery modules are equipped with additional waterproof gaskets and drainage holes, individual cells still require careful protection.
